Poodles come in four different sizes, but regardless of height, they share the characteristic qualities of the breed — intelligence, elegance, an active nature and a curly coat. From the smallest Toy Poodle to the Standard Poodle, each size has its own unique qualities.

1 The Four Poodle Sizes
According to the FCI standard, Poodles come in four sizes:
Toy Poodle 24–28 cm at the withers
Miniature Poodle Over 28–35 cm
Medium Poodle Over 35–45 cm
Standard Poodle Over 45–60 cm (+2 cm tolerance)
All four sizes belong to the same breed and share the characteristic Poodle type.

2 What Does “Height at the Withers” Mean?
A Poodle’s height is measured from the ground to the highest point of the withers, the area between the shoulder blades. This is the standard measurement used to determine a Poodle’s size.
This means that a Poodle’s size is not determined by appearance or weight, but primarily by height at the withers.

3 Toy Poodle – The Smallest Variety
The Toy Poodle is the smallest Poodle variety. According to the FCI standard, it measures 24–28 cm at the withers, with an ideal height of 25 cm.
Although small in size, the Toy Poodle retains the characteristic appearance and proportions of the breed. It is intelligent, active and strongly attached to its people.
Its small size makes it well suited to many different living environments, but a Toy Poodle is not simply a lap dog — it still needs exercise, play, mental stimulation and regular grooming.

4 Miniature Poodle
The Miniature Poodle is larger than the Toy Poodle but smaller than the Medium Poodle. According to the FCI standard, it measures over 28 cm and up to 35 cm at the withers.
Like the other varieties, the Miniature Poodle retains the typical proportions and characteristics of the breed. It is compact, elegant and highly intelligent.

5 Medium Poodle
The Medium Poodle measures over 35 cm and up to 45 cm at the withers. It sits between the smaller varieties and the Standard Poodle in size.
It retains the elegant build, intelligence and energetic character that the breed is known for, but in a larger format.

6 Standard Poodle
The Standard Poodle is the largest variety. According to the FCI standard, it measures over 45 cm and up to 60 cm at the withers, with a tolerance of +2 cm.
Despite its size, it should retain the elegant and harmonious build characteristic of the Poodle. Standard Poodles are active, intelligent and versatile, with a strong working heritage.

7 Does Size Change a Poodle’s Personality?
All Poodle varieties belong to the same breed and share many characteristic qualities. However, every dog is an individual, so temperament cannot be determined by size alone.
Toy Poodles can be just as active, intelligent and curious as their larger relatives. Size can influence lifestyle and practical needs, but personality is shaped by genetics, socialization, upbringing and the individual dog.
